Bath Bomb Tips:
Drying Bath Bombs: You can lay your bath bombs on foam, soft paper, towels, old blankets, etc. Check out our Fizzy Foam for the ideal drying solution.
- Use our Vented Drying Trays in conjuction with the Fizzy Foam for a space saving solution that can provide faster drying.
- You can use a dehumidifer in a small room – remember to make sure your bath bombs don’t dry too fast.
- Not sure if you need a dehumidifer? Use a humidistat to read your room conditions and adjust from there.
Use of Additives: The most compact, fine-textured, fizziest, most shippable Bath Bombs are just regular citric acid, baking soda, scent, some oil, and witch hazel.
- Any dry ingredient other than Baking Soda and Citric Acid can ruin Bath Bomb production and quality. Some powders do not bond well, like oil and water.
- The following additives have been found to detract from bonding and may cause cracking, splitting, draw excess moisture, or faster degradation on the shelf:
- Epsom Salt
- Corn Starch
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
- Tip: Put the additive in the center of the bath bomb. If the shape is large enough, add half the material, make a depression, add a small amount of powder, fill the rest of the way and press. Put the material on top in a dimple and cover with frosting, cocoa butter, etc.
- If after using our starting recipe you decide to try adding other powders and have challenges, try reducing the amount used.
Moisture and Humidity: Keep external moisture or humidity in mind when making bath bombs.
- We suggest not making bath bombs when it is raining, or with open windows on a humid day.
- If you are in an area that is very humid or it rains frequently, set up a room with a dehumidifier.
- Keep your moisture and humidity levels into consideration on your wait time after mixing. It will impact the amount of moisture you actually need.
- It is imperitive that your dry ingredients are kept dry.
- If you purchase powders in large quantities, plan on using them as soon as possible after opening. Make sure to date them!
- If possible, transfer open powders to sealable containers.
- Use a desiccant in your powder containers to aid in keeping them dry.
Create an efficient production space: Below are a few tips to make your production area and time as efficient as possible.
- Measure and mix all dry ingredients, same with liquids.
- Have a fast means of mixing – check out our Pot Whipper for mixing large batches.
- For very large batches, we recommend using a restaraunt grade planetary mixer.
- Set up for an entire days work – have multiple batches ready to combine ingredients.
- Layout your workspace with access in mind. Work space height, stools, drying racks and mixing accessories should be at optimal distance for efficient production.
Record Successes and Failures: New equipment may require new production methods or new recipes. Write everything down, and only change one new thing at a time – this way it is easy to track when things go awry.

Bath Bomb Press FAQ:
Butterfly Bath Bomb Mold not working?
The Foot of the Butterfly Mold may stick in the mold if you do not have enough material in it. Deeper molds may require filling halfway and pressing with a couple of fingers to compress the material at the bottom of the mold. Using your fingers will help to ensure you are filling all of the crevices. Then you fill the rest of the mold and finish pressing. We recommend overfilling a little to start, then press down one final time with the palm of your hand. You can also adjust the depth a little.
Your Bath Bomb Mix may need to be slightly damper with the Butterfly Mold. Make sure to use Witch Hazel to keep what has been mixed damp enough to pass the Clump Test.
- Clump Test: Take a fist full of mix, squeeze it with your fingers, then drop it back into your bowl from about 4-5 inches above mix and make sure it all holds together.
Is there a specified manufacturing limit for the Willow Bath Bomb Press? We make about 100 bombs an hour, 6 hours a day, five days a week. Would it hold up making that quantity, and is that guaranteed?
There is no limit as far as we know. The production numbers would be relative to the number of presses, people, and ability of the producer to set up and maintain efficient production.
There is a warranty on the Willow Press.
You may want to consider the EZ Way Bath Bomb Press. It is Pneumatic (Air Powered) which of course will be much faster.
Sticking Bath Bombs
We recently bought some tray foam to place our MaxiBalls on and have experienced some difficulty. The bath bombs have been sticking to the foam, and the peaks leave indents.
Have you seen this before? Any suggestions?
Bath Bombs sticking to the tray foam is an indication that your mixture is too wet. The deep dimples from placing them on the foam is another indication of them being too wet.
Too much wetness will also reduce the nice fizz that your customers love when using the bath bombs.
You may want to try a couple of different things with the Fizzy Foam that some customers have done.
- Cover the foam with cloth, like a pillowcase. When your bath bombs are ready for packaging, simply take the cloth off the foam and throw it in the washing machine for extra-easy clean-up for you.
- For larger size bombs, turn your fizzy foam over (flat side) to avoid dimpling of any kind.
- If you are not using Witch Hazel, you might try it. It sets up quicker, helps in release, and may help the BBs hold together better.
We rarely encounter a case like this, but it generally has to do with compaction and moisture. We get a lot of re-sales on our Fizzy Foam, so we know it is working.
The Press can be set to stop at most any depth. Most people use the volume of material to set depth and just go more by feel. In the end, this is quicker.
The extra depth of the mold allows you to put in whatever material you need for density and weight.
Cleaning your Bath Bomb Press
How do you clean the Press and surrounding material?
Just use a bench brush, such as the one we carry in our accessories section, to brush away excess from the work surfaces.
A plastic putty knife works well to scrape anything clinging to the workbench and press table.
How do the raw materials get placed into the hopper, and where is the hopper?
There is not a hopper. There is a tube that you fill by hand or with a measuring cup. When filled, the volume of material is correct for the average size Bath Bomb. If you wish a taller Bath Bomb or a ring around it, then you can pack a little more in. Most people go by feel once they get used to the press, as it is faster and surprisingly accurate.
Concerning a Hopper: As you know, since you are making Bath Bombs now, that the material, when mixed, does not flow well when poured. It clings, packs, and compresses itself. Therefore to use a hopper, one would have to design an auger method to dispense the material.
Since the material dries quickly and you can mix only a couple of gallons at a time, it may not be a cost-effective way of dispensing the material.
Feeding Material into Bath Bomb Mold
Is each bath bomb fed into the mold individually, or can you load batches of mix and then control how much goes into the mold?
You fill each mold individually. For multiple bath bombs per press, check out our Bath Bomb MultiPress.
Note: Many of our customers buy extra tubes and the bottom part of the mold. One person fills the tubes and hands them to the person using the press. They can also mix the materials while the other person arranges the balls onto the drying trays, stacks, etc.
Height of Bath Bombs
The Cuber, Tablet, and Cylinder molds allow you to go up to almost 2” in depth.
Materials of Bath Bomb Molds
Out of what material are the bath bomb molds manufactured? Plastic, steel, silicone, etc.?
The material depends on the bath bomb mold. Most molds are plastic; however, some molds are a special resin.
Perfectly Round Bath Bombs?
Are the bath bombs perfectly round, or do they have any flat spots on them?
The amount of material used determines whether they are perfectly round or elongated.
There is a tube that you fill by hand or with a measuring cup.
When filled, the volume of material is correct for the average size Bath Bomb. If you want a taller Bath Bomb or a ring, you can pack in a bit more material. There are no flat spots.
Seam on Bath Bombs
Do the bath bombs have a visible seam?
Yes. We provide a De-Ringer to remove most of it but there is no physical way to remove the ring from any balled Bath Bomb other than brushing the seam by hand.
Some companies leave the ring and elongate the Bath Bomb to leave it more prominent.
Using Fillable Christmas Tree Ornaments
I make bath bombs using Plastic Acrylic Fillable Christmas Ball Ornaments. Is using your Bath Bomb Press any faster? Does it make harder bath bombs?
The answer to both of your questions is YES.
One very important benefit is your customers will not be exposed to potential toxicity inherent from the decomposing plastic. Have you noticed how your molds eventually degrade, get sticky and start disappearing? The plastic is breaking down, out-gassing, and it is becoming part of your Bath Bombs. The citric acid, oils, and fragrances break down the plastic, and it’s all downhill from there.
We make our molds out of materials approved for containing food and or water. They do not break down or degrade with citric acid, fragrance oils, essential oils, vegetable oils, etc.
Weight of Mini Ball Bath Bombs
What is the weight of a round, dry bath bomb made on the Willow Press with the MiniBall mold?
The ingredients can make a difference as to the weight of the bath bombs. Our dried weights for the MiniBall are between 3 and 3.5 ounces.
