How do I prevent my soap from seizing?

Seizing occurs when the soap saponifies too quickly. This acceleration may be caused by additives (fragrance oils, alcohol, etc.), an incorrect water discount, or an incorrect temperature.

Acceleration may be prevented by adding testy fragrance oils earlier in the process and monitoring your water and temperature levels. If using alcoholic beverages in your recipe, try cooking the alcohol out before adding the liquid.

If the batch has already accelerated, you may be able to save the batch by finishing it as a Hot Process soap. You can also grind the soap to dilute it into a future Hot Process batch.

How long does it take to bring soap to trace?

Trace occurs at different times and is dependent on formula and batch size. There are multiple influences, including water discounts, certain FO’s/EO’s, and heat.

– More water = slower trace
– Higher temperature = faster trace
– Spice essential oils = faster trace

The trace time of each recipe will be different, so it is important to take notes and tweak your process to work for you.

How fast do you mix in a Pot Tipper, and what do you use?

I am assuming you want to mix CP (cold processed) soap. Trace times on CP soap can take a long time, as you know. We recommend our Pot Whipper, which has Nitrile, flexible blades which become more aggressive as the speed picks up by creating a fluttering action. The blades are cupped to create a downward pull, which creates a faster, more thorough mix and makes it easier to pull in additives, herbs, etc. This shape also eliminates air bubbles common to paddle blades and mixers not made for stirring soap.
You must mix at speeds above 1200 rpm, or it will take you a long time to reach trace, especially an all olive oil soap. Actually, 1500 to 1800 is best, and always stir at a 10° to 15° degree angle. You should reach trace in 5 to 7 minutes with a palm, coconut, olive base.

You say on your site that the Pot Whipper will reduce my tracing time and give me a better blend of ingredients. Can you give me an idea as to what my tracing time might be using the Pot Whipper?

Generally speaking, your tracing time will be between 5 to 7 minutes, depending upon your batch.
